Frequently Asked Question? Answers!

    • What are the most popular areas for laser hair removal?

In our experience the most popular areas are female facial hair, bikini line hair and back hair for men.

    • Will using a home hair removal device save you time?

While you might get different results you’ll find that using home laser hair removal systems on anything but the smallest of treatment areas will take a considerable amount of time. A reason for this is because home laser hair removal device generally uses a smaller treatment head than what’s used on professional laser hair removal machines such as the Prowave LX and ND Yag 1064 laser used by our technicians.

The technology of our device is engineered to be more powerful than others on the market and is why the technology is owned by most plastic surgeons and dermatologists in Canada. The precise engineering of this platform ensures that there is a consistent energy delivery with each pulse. The ND Yag has more than 88 clinical studies to prove it’s efficacy. Consistent studies reveal a greater than 85% reduction in as little as 4 treatments. The Prowave LX is engineered to deliver at a 755 nm wavelength (Alexandrite) which is the gold standard for treating lighter, finer hair.

    • What is the difference between an IPL and a laser?

The acronym for IPL is Intense Pulse Light however ours is Intelligent Pulsed Light due to it’s extensive engineering by a unique team of laser physicists. Each pulse is calibrated making it one of the most powerful in it’s class. It is able to pick up lighter finer hair.

    • How is laser hair removal different from electrolysis hair removal?

Laser hair removal is much faster. Electrolysis hair removal requires more time because it’s a process that treats only one hair at a time, whereas laser hair removal treats many hairs per every laser pulse. Laser hair removal for an area like the underarms, for example, can be treated in only 20 minutes., while a mans back or a ladies lower leg can be treated in as little as 40 minutes..

    • What are the risks of hair removal?

Some of our patients have discovered that laser hair removal as offered by Medispa At The Gates Medical Centre is a lunchtime procedure. Since there is no recovery time you can return to work or play immediately. The lasers used by our certified technicians do not remove skin, so the risks are very low.

A comprehensive consent form is explained in detail prior to treating an individual. During that time emphasis is always placed on the possible risks. As with any device, there are risks to doing treatments, while some include health conditions and medications others are outlines such as burns. Every effort is made to avoid any possibility of burns and will be discussed with the client prior to having a treatment including protocols about wearing makeup, lotions, tattoo’s in the treatment area and emphasis on exposure to the sun.

    • Is there an age limit for laser hair removal?

There really is no age limit. That said we currently do not treat children under the age of 13. Young adults and adolescents that are not finished growing will develop new hair as they grow, and will require touch-ups to maintain the results. Older people usually have grey hair that will not respond to laser.

    • Is laser hair removal painful?

Our patients have compared it to a rubber band snapping against their skin. Compared to waxing the treatment there is very little discomfort, of course, everyone’s pain tolerance is different. If you do find the treatment uncomfortable, talk to the technician we may be able to prescribe a numbing cream for the skin.

    • My skin is of a dark complexion, will laser hair removal work for me? Is it safe for me?

The answer is yes! Our laser hair removal will work and is totally safe. We use two distinct lasers: one for lighter skin and one for darker skin.

No matter how dark the skin, our ND Yag1064 laser is considered the gold standard for treating unwanted hair on darker skin types. Its longer wavelength safely bypasses the skin and targets the melanin in the hair shaft, destroying the unwanted hair follicle. You are going to like the results and no more dealing with bumps, ingrown hairs and irritation.

The ProWave LX – overcomes the limits of other IPL technology for hair removal. Lighter and finer hair removal is more easily possible with the better targeting capabilities. The ProWave LX provides a fast, comfortable hair removal treatment that is used on small and large areas.

    • Should I be worried about "radiation" to my skin?

There is nothing to worry about. Our hair removal lasers produce “non-ionizing” radiation which is simply the radiation of light and is approved by Health Canada for your skin and is absolutely safe otherwise our technicians would not work with the equipment!
